The four Cs, quickly
Cut
How well the stone was shaped and polished. It matters more than the other three for how a diamond actually looks, and it is the one most people ignore.
Color
Graded D (colorless) through Z. The difference between neighboring grades is invisible to almost everyone and very visible on the price tag.
Clarity
Internal inclusions. Anything graded VS2 or better is "eye-clean" — you will not see an inclusion without a loupe.
Carat
Weight, not size. Two stones of equal carat can look quite different depending on the cut.
Buying pre-owned is where the value is: a diamond does not wear out, and the first owner has already absorbed the retail markup.
